Happy spring, and happy happy May Day!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
April was a busy month at Blueberry Backroads. It's the month I make a big fat push to get new patterns completed and to the printer. Why? International Quilt Market! It's the big wholesale show that we in the quilt world vend at each year. It's where the creativity culminates! So I'll show you what I've been working on in a sec, but first... FLOWERS!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Just before Christmas my boyfriend and I got ourselves into a house, and my garden, once covered in snow, is beginning to bloom. Bloom, bloom, bloom...</div>

The previous owner was a prolific gardener, and now I'm the lucky duck who gets to see what pops up. Perennials rock!</div>

<div>
Back to embroidery. I released three new patterns a couple weeks ago, and now I'm finishing SEVEN... yes, seven more. They'll be available in a week or two. But here are the three that are up and running on <a href="http://blueberrybackroads.com/" target="_blank">my website</a>!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Cherries Jubilee was inspired by that fabric. What's cuter than cherries? No, really...what? And I decided to incorporate a little bit of color crayon into the mix. If you follow my blog, you know it's become my new favorite thing. (How long before I need a new favorite thing...???)</div>

<br />
Tweet! Chirp! This one was fun. I've been playing around with wool felt, and these lil' birdies are the result. I turned them into Christmas ornaments for my nieces, and then kept going. They're easy, fun, a lovely little gift.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And in getting ready for Market, I've really stepped up my kits. I've been cutting fabric, getting more and more kits and fabric on my website. It's been fun.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Those little bundles are wool felt pieces for Itty Bitty Birds. And on the right are strips I cut for Merry Little Christmas. I found that clothes rack a couple of years ago, and since my jeans don't fit, I found a much cuter use for it!</div>

<div>
Today is the first day of the <a href="https://www.fabshophop.com/registration.asp" target="_blank">Virtual Fab Shop Hop</a>. It's a cool opportunity to find out about other quilt shops and designers, visit their sites, see what's new, and... win prizes! There's this hippity hoppity bunny you can try to find on each page, and it enters you to win. Kinda fun - I like the interactive part of it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So that's what's been happening on down the Backroads. I'm headed back to the sewing room to stitch away some more. Visit <a href="http://blueberrybackroads.com/" target="_blank">my website</a> to see all my patterns, and stay up to date with what's new by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/blueberrybackroads" target="_blank">Liking Blueberry Backroads on Facebook</a>.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
It's always an exciting day for me when I get to release new patterns. Three new ones this week! Go to <a href="http://www.blueberrybackroads.com/" target="_blank">my website</a> and check 'em out. They're at the top of the Spring & Summer Patterns page.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Which takes me to this blog post - I framed one of those new patterns, my first time trying it. I love the look. Here's what Welcome Spring! looks like in its cute little frame.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidjcZbBKuCZOthv5HNgrUp7F0Xi3IhlLEcrZh-0JzxKzqr43Bsa03ThELp5yDS_QbhYnVlDT4DbFZ1wPUDfT1vGKRfNz3XIcdXnVtbsgF9XdwG6LmhQq0Jdv42WF7UGNd__0Lk6KcdaL9p/s1600/Cover+082+-+Welcome+Spring!.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidjcZbBKuCZOthv5HNgrUp7F0Xi3IhlLEcrZh-0JzxKzqr43Bsa03ThELp5yDS_QbhYnVlDT4DbFZ1wPUDfT1vGKRfNz3XIcdXnVtbsgF9XdwG6LmhQq0Jdv42WF7UGNd__0Lk6KcdaL9p/s1600/Cover+082+-+Welcome+Spring!.jpg" height="640" width="414" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I thought I'd take you through how I did it. There was some trial and error, and fingers very sticky with fabric glue, a little swearing...but eventually I got it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's what you'll need: Some fairly stiff cardboard and a box cutter, a multi-purpose adhesive, thumb tacks, nice paper for the back, a stitchery with room around the edges to frame, and your frame! But of course. The type of frame I used has that nice groove on the back to place your stitchery. Oh, and you'll need a pencil and tape measure which I forgot to place in the picture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC3WbV6UoqZJE5fzo8f7nxjzW-l7lWEMD_-yzyH3gcDPzsSz49liA-1UAbK5Oe_1nRpIoDfuo7gwAyApzN3O59CB7Z4tlZrPa-t31LGRAkHaC6r_JXgM7flsvgfgDeZ4Dt7-oCGle3XwTT/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Supplies+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC3WbV6UoqZJE5fzo8f7nxjzW-l7lWEMD_-yzyH3gcDPzsSz49liA-1UAbK5Oe_1nRpIoDfuo7gwAyApzN3O59CB7Z4tlZrPa-t31LGRAkHaC6r_JXgM7flsvgfgDeZ4Dt7-oCGle3XwTT/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Supplies+Collage.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Full disclosure here... my camera was full, stopped taking pictures, and I didn't notice until much later. I thought it was being "weird" and I switched to another camera. Oops! But I'll explain, and we'll get back to photos in a bit. I promise.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Measure the dimensions of that groove on the back of the frame, draw the same size rectangle onto your cardboard, and use your box cutter to cut it out. See how it fits, and cut it down if need be. It shouldn't be too tight, as you'll need a little room for the fabric to fit in there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next place your fabric atop the cardboard and fuss around with it until you have it nicely centered. Once it looks just right on the front (and this can take quite a bit of fussing), lay it down, and use your pencil to trace around the cardboard so you know right where it goes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lift up the cardboard, and spray that adhesive onto the fabric. Lay the cardboard back down within those traced lines, and flip it over to make sure everything landed where you wanted it to. If not, no big deal. The adhesive isn't super glue, and you can repeat until it's to your liking.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Back to the pictures! Place the whole thing into your frame, and again - look at the front to make sure you're all nice and centered.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheHvt1HW2AYZRbCowU01hxKQRF4NgaCW6Y-L0J_aeFEyPD9DceQc1qwDjrYo6dVXxoL_ce-Ztwbkvp1WlkCCreUmcku4yhKqHScq0kmW70LHdjpkmQq5Klkhb08pXceJwb3-HRmm6pDe3u/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Back.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheHvt1HW2AYZRbCowU01hxKQRF4NgaCW6Y-L0J_aeFEyPD9DceQc1qwDjrYo6dVXxoL_ce-Ztwbkvp1WlkCCreUmcku4yhKqHScq0kmW70LHdjpkmQq5Klkhb08pXceJwb3-HRmm6pDe3u/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Back.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once everything is positioned just as you want it, let the adhesive dry... yeah right! Ok so that would be the right thing to do. Me, I get excited to see the end result, and don't wait. Don't be like me. Let your adhesive dry. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
THEN, get out those thumb tacks and secure that baby down. Pierce right through the fabric, into the wood in that groove. Keep peeking at the front to make sure things haven't shifted. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxqgUb7rgV5MFavvXzpKyyB3wtP_CkXYW_eanfqV4TFglSfiqOgqYYeV9JuvzMqIX2zHw0tsz6x0_Qs3_eILVNFki7URlQ0iXBcUcO6T3Ss6heAyMVSI5WbFwC4-HZZu3po8xFJIaGAVfB/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Thumb+Tack+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxqgUb7rgV5MFavvXzpKyyB3wtP_CkXYW_eanfqV4TFglSfiqOgqYYeV9JuvzMqIX2zHw0tsz6x0_Qs3_eILVNFki7URlQ0iXBcUcO6T3Ss6heAyMVSI5WbFwC4-HZZu3po8xFJIaGAVfB/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Thumb+Tack+Collage.jpg" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now cut away all that extra fabric, leaving just enough to tack down to the back of the frame. Be careful not to pull too hard because the fabric can still shift. Only because you didn't let your adhesive dry! Or maybe you did... good job if you did.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH7RD6gGoG_UE2bgBR65pVM9A0OtK59FC-sLugb-sP0BaL8Wnhm5eq8L460Tf-gsccUy5uD111wZwshCIx-wSU1LjQt_XEUUfh5ACNqgZZGAyw2loPdokky3l2-3tzbTOHBBwFn1VwiA1M/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Cut+Away+Fabric+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH7RD6gGoG_UE2bgBR65pVM9A0OtK59FC-sLugb-sP0BaL8Wnhm5eq8L460Tf-gsccUy5uD111wZwshCIx-wSU1LjQt_XEUUfh5ACNqgZZGAyw2loPdokky3l2-3tzbTOHBBwFn1VwiA1M/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Cut+Away+Fabric+Collage.jpg" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now cut out a piece of paper just a bit smaller than your frame. Cue that elusive tape measure and pencil.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0nv7g5RSjLqLvUeSX8rQaKjoULXkKDMtFoQfymrKUJpCo_4NjyiEju2MMT7_oieMHgkNXj3XBdFblApYXYaMqd23KF_rPkY5L-c_EUeokUbX-rIKiacxx6txK32goPqxiONkB7Z4OsSwf/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Brown+Paper+Back.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0nv7g5RSjLqLvUeSX8rQaKjoULXkKDMtFoQfymrKUJpCo_4NjyiEju2MMT7_oieMHgkNXj3XBdFblApYXYaMqd23KF_rPkY5L-c_EUeokUbX-rIKiacxx6txK32goPqxiONkB7Z4OsSwf/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Brown+Paper+Back.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Place the paper over the back of the frame, and tack down, making sure to catch the fabric with each tack. Now you have a pretty nice looking back! You just need to add a hanger, of which there are maaaannnnny types at your local hardware store. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdANnYYnC-X_3LwVBnOJo6HHz0qAO6adZIanOMkgrdgjz_jz4fF373tZGUmEe_Q18r7vSGB3rdZ0xoQXraY9HEWZUPB1lpja_2u7Thaf3McJRIw7q8Rf4ViLr-nhIPnav8x6kGKHO1cFfD/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Thumb+Tack+Collage+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdANnYYnC-X_3LwVBnOJo6HHz0qAO6adZIanOMkgrdgjz_jz4fF373tZGUmEe_Q18r7vSGB3rdZ0xoQXraY9HEWZUPB1lpja_2u7Thaf3McJRIw7q8Rf4ViLr-nhIPnav8x6kGKHO1cFfD/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Thumb+Tack+Collage+2.jpg" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But how does the front look? Ta da!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjREv61pfCzckZkLimH2ehkpgirtY2Xegkzd7inki_Jmb-bsUCEcRMX2GURNdkltvJnSGBA1gpc_k4xBZhUvRuwBiedhfrvxJ6QLxk-zIefwut65XtH5agfPOL6Dn3FEL4L7s8JcOtvnay/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Final.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjREv61pfCzckZkLimH2ehkpgirtY2Xegkzd7inki_Jmb-bsUCEcRMX2GURNdkltvJnSGBA1gpc_k4xBZhUvRuwBiedhfrvxJ6QLxk-zIefwut65XtH5agfPOL6Dn3FEL4L7s8JcOtvnay/s1600/Framing+a+Stitchery+-+Final.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And there you have it. Now I'm sure there are many ways to skin this cat, but this worked for me, and was pretty painless, definitely inexpensive. </div>

<br />
Happy happy spring! I am looooovin' on this Minnesota sunshine and inspired to work on a spring pattern with cute little birdies.<br />
<br />
I recently discovered this super handy product from <a href="http://www.sulky.com/" target="_blank">Sulky</a> - Sticky Fabri-Solvy. It's a self-adhesive, water soluble stabilizer that's shown here in sheets. You can print or trace your design onto your fabric (or in this case, wool felt). It has tons of uses - a stabilizer, templates (which is what I'll be using it for in this post), and as a way to transfer an embroidery design onto dark fabrics or wool. Awesome right??!! I do agree. I do so so agree.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbRDmectP-sldx5oRFWTpSScQB_T28IexDGRgFhMfoHFpWU3h1_d7Wh_yVYJ4QPMVYGO2z48QnsSB_qHJ86F1Si21d4ta-Wer_4vCfMtv4hIMfDaU0iZZf1hnm62bs3EVMZd4U2zQv7Sls/s1600/Sulky+Sticky+Fabri-Solvy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbRDmectP-sldx5oRFWTpSScQB_T28IexDGRgFhMfoHFpWU3h1_d7Wh_yVYJ4QPMVYGO2z48QnsSB_qHJ86F1Si21d4ta-Wer_4vCfMtv4hIMfDaU0iZZf1hnm62bs3EVMZd4U2zQv7Sls/s1600/Sulky+Sticky+Fabri-Solvy.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
So let me show you how it works. I first printed my designs onto a sheet of the Fabri-Solvy. It's printer friendly which rocks because I need to make A LOT of little birds for this pattern and did not feel like tracing them all out. BUT you certainly can trace out any pattern you like. Throw it over a light box or up against a sunny window, and use a Pigma pen or water soluble fabric pen to trace out your shapes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk9DIMMinEcL11PVi2Eho2njIv9ON3YZuE117ULGauCy0vbGqdDSD-6CYFACd-34L4zx2gxElTIP-hNcnOSi52W7C9Phv1jAyBtV3-lp9EKjHQcadXmXUFY3BJi_Ox83-ABc8v3RW8qnIn/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk9DIMMinEcL11PVi2Eho2njIv9ON3YZuE117ULGauCy0vbGqdDSD-6CYFACd-34L4zx2gxElTIP-hNcnOSi52W7C9Phv1jAyBtV3-lp9EKjHQcadXmXUFY3BJi_Ox83-ABc8v3RW8qnIn/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
What shall we schtick it to...?? I'm making these little birdies out of wool felt. Today I choose...amarillo!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKiotv5iisdS-ypEaW1p2UVH0SGPzhYxoBiug0hBTN7putCC7OHLykd9WTd2Tua-bgBHwyoz4ADYiOq_4KGzR4yJeZjQcp2qHuG6q0geX_OEZdXAeixELruXCQQbTSS7a3W4W8Fo2DlAy4/s1600/Wool+Felt.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKiotv5iisdS-ypEaW1p2UVH0SGPzhYxoBiug0hBTN7putCC7OHLykd9WTd2Tua-bgBHwyoz4ADYiOq_4KGzR4yJeZjQcp2qHuG6q0geX_OEZdXAeixELruXCQQbTSS7a3W4W8Fo2DlAy4/s1600/Wool+Felt.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Cut your shapes out just beyond the traced lines. (If you use fusible web for applique, you'll find this to be basically the same process). Cut, cut, snip. Cut, cut, snip.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA9tieRmyVXlE79I6gn1tkavni9eoWO9EOsH4ZIl_V-fndGzoo0RHcpXo-2paE50XayLHHxU_lB5aginu_tHF_qULCuHf-wG9wy1-rzDwV0dCxp0qt9AByxkBPQZKuFvTptrem_2VhcU_-/s1600/Fabri-Sovly+-+Birds1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA9tieRmyVXlE79I6gn1tkavni9eoWO9EOsH4ZIl_V-fndGzoo0RHcpXo-2paE50XayLHHxU_lB5aginu_tHF_qULCuHf-wG9wy1-rzDwV0dCxp0qt9AByxkBPQZKuFvTptrem_2VhcU_-/s1600/Fabri-Sovly+-+Birds1.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Peel away the release sheet...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiov2bE35sVmZwvuJkbpASP7dgEACuTA6U2hlC-XtH8VitScmCCUJfEOPhF4ml7V9he_jtpB05t_Mq9mVh2LbmZAokjxYoD2Pcs0TgwCSysCRFcTrmdgsg6xOStGs_jEWsbJzZk_y79Bu7k/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiov2bE35sVmZwvuJkbpASP7dgEACuTA6U2hlC-XtH8VitScmCCUJfEOPhF4ml7V9he_jtpB05t_Mq9mVh2LbmZAokjxYoD2Pcs0TgwCSysCRFcTrmdgsg6xOStGs_jEWsbJzZk_y79Bu7k/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds2.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And schtick it to your wool felt (or wool, or fabric, or...)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyXkvUj3iW1OBBqnC41JkuIxa-kwGxkhxnJF6WZ6J2stqUeUNkzBL35G_z03sFbK37xnTgq0jEyMPECBuvC7xwISorLdP8VIUtDFw5CBQXJ_U3STcvw7yvG2BtBXDMG3Nqiw6xA-4T9gyq/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyXkvUj3iW1OBBqnC41JkuIxa-kwGxkhxnJF6WZ6J2stqUeUNkzBL35G_z03sFbK37xnTgq0jEyMPECBuvC7xwISorLdP8VIUtDFw5CBQXJ_U3STcvw7yvG2BtBXDMG3Nqiw6xA-4T9gyq/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds3.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Adhere all those little pieces, and cut them out on the lines.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglF7_NxA7YQEsYPbycQpfSDT6fVnotBCizbvnLvJUflKNLEAqRRRrmF1eV-62YNQ4NuwFH-sPbLPtfbjdAbo0-0A_6CEi-PF6MfbkGKpUhOasOdWE93K_15fccZ3zObcaQzTZUt7bHwmLL/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglF7_NxA7YQEsYPbycQpfSDT6fVnotBCizbvnLvJUflKNLEAqRRRrmF1eV-62YNQ4NuwFH-sPbLPtfbjdAbo0-0A_6CEi-PF6MfbkGKpUhOasOdWE93K_15fccZ3zObcaQzTZUt7bHwmLL/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds5.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Once cut out, pull away the sticky stuff, and your shape emerges! Chirp!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUTbHW-cjNS1QuNcuBIz8LlkjWBOD5s1QcKZjJTtGJ4Tvn9xBbMlFNH3gFH_QsIXWAioZg9hc7LMqGzlFLTDPcOgPeRDND_EkzK7YYsTDcybKxkbkqVDflaVKwS3MVtLQtHx9o0GaZDWWO/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUTbHW-cjNS1QuNcuBIz8LlkjWBOD5s1QcKZjJTtGJ4Tvn9xBbMlFNH3gFH_QsIXWAioZg9hc7LMqGzlFLTDPcOgPeRDND_EkzK7YYsTDcybKxkbkqVDflaVKwS3MVtLQtHx9o0GaZDWWO/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds6.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizzFat9mWR4CALeBgOvfwguf1tCgF6-fXv7e3tk51viiZthqxc8TCl1lXUMQuZOILBTdex14ZqToiTT4PpYGz6oCJv54TXwIKHi3OWHhLEtpopROUCzlr6vo1eFY_RPkF-DKTQca0Tiien/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizzFat9mWR4CALeBgOvfwguf1tCgF6-fXv7e3tk51viiZthqxc8TCl1lXUMQuZOILBTdex14ZqToiTT4PpYGz6oCJv54TXwIKHi3OWHhLEtpopROUCzlr6vo1eFY_RPkF-DKTQca0Tiien/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds7.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now what's really cool is that sticky stuff stays sticky for a few more rounds. I'll use the same little templates to cut out bluebirds next. Again, just adhere your shapes to the wool felt, and this time you'll cut along the edge of each shape. You can also pin your template in place once the stickiness is gone. Or... go to your printer and just print another sheet of birdies.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsUoy6W2WBz7ongQNUgQ6AtPinLf-NUzwWqpuKfj1-JbY6h5nbOmYqedtzU-lJOEccET9120po0zbhHvUHbOf33tWxoQ2fwjf0842iJHn1bSynu4Vw1SvfHEXMVDlYchaApbFYXUp3pll2/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsUoy6W2WBz7ongQNUgQ6AtPinLf-NUzwWqpuKfj1-JbY6h5nbOmYqedtzU-lJOEccET9120po0zbhHvUHbOf33tWxoQ2fwjf0842iJHn1bSynu4Vw1SvfHEXMVDlYchaApbFYXUp3pll2/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds8.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfB2MLHDfuIgQXkfDb4VqoM5G5sQSs170yXMppW7HAMkrQQ3jxRDEiFpZPaZagm4_lRFJ6MBWbJuRUkIS9GyUs1EL0QRGWF5VqQ6HmW9aZ-eRyNvt7WfoOYfnL0CBln7EUIdR3GukkpBjr/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfB2MLHDfuIgQXkfDb4VqoM5G5sQSs170yXMppW7HAMkrQQ3jxRDEiFpZPaZagm4_lRFJ6MBWbJuRUkIS9GyUs1EL0QRGWF5VqQ6HmW9aZ-eRyNvt7WfoOYfnL0CBln7EUIdR3GukkpBjr/s1600/Fabri-Solvy+-+Birds9.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
That's all there is to it. Easy, right? And because it's water soluble, you can stick it to dark fabric, wool, whatever, embroider right on top of it (hand or machine), and it dissolves away in warm water when you're done. Super cool. Just be sure both your fabric and thread are colorfast.<br />
<br />
Tweet tweet say the goldfinch. Chirp chirp say the bluebirds.<br />

<br />
It is COLD right now in Minnesota. I mean 25 degrees below zero plus some nasty wind COLD! So I decided to do a little "functional" sewing today and make up a double-sided draft stopper for our front door. Full disclosure - I don't do a whole lot of "functional" sewing. I embroider cute little birds and happy little snowmen. I can sew a button... maybe repair a torn seam... but that's about it. So this was a nice little challenge for me. I got to use the tape measure. I even hooked it to my belt... makes a girl feel important, you know? :)<br />
<br />
So step one is to get that tape measure out, and measure the length of your door. Then measure the width of your door. Jot those numbers down and...<br />
<br />
Take yourself into that freezing cold wind and purchase some "outdoor fabric". That's what it's called. Upholstery fabric or anything like that would work well too. Choose something to match your furniture or that will blend well with the floor. My door measures just shy of 2" in width, and a 1/2 yard of fabric was exactly enough. Maybe get a little more if you want to play around with it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBlemyrTvS9tKXSds8LhCLcvQUWwP2e6Vn1DDYu0767c-weKSrpPP6ej2Km24pVBLKF3gZYdJ7a1HLIASbOd7uB8lpNQpJ2fTUApY_vIpNdLGeEO4GK-xr4rDmwlWTZDPYWsO_e2Bi7YvA/s1600/DSC03342.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBlemyrTvS9tKXSds8LhCLcvQUWwP2e6Vn1DDYu0767c-weKSrpPP6ej2Km24pVBLKF3gZYdJ7a1HLIASbOd7uB8lpNQpJ2fTUApY_vIpNdLGeEO4GK-xr4rDmwlWTZDPYWsO_e2Bi7YvA/s1600/DSC03342.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You'll also need a couple of pipe covers. Pick these up at any home goods store, WalMart, wherever. You want ones that are almost as long as your door. My door is 36" across, and so are these pipe covers. I'll actually cut them down a bit to allow me to open and close my door - a critical piece, don't you think?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi__gQ9RpL2MJ5A7z-NssdEdUMczmCOSGUrXP8mQnUw9LIzoU1sJQ2NY7C4OyJULFY5TVBWwO_JhoiBJL6BKOZYgBKxAAfdDIrRWolv4Q0LFlKgoJx5E2RLKg6z04is6iNT6Z3_GZSKCBe_/s1600/DSC03332.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi__gQ9RpL2MJ5A7z-NssdEdUMczmCOSGUrXP8mQnUw9LIzoU1sJQ2NY7C4OyJULFY5TVBWwO_JhoiBJL6BKOZYgBKxAAfdDIrRWolv4Q0LFlKgoJx5E2RLKg6z04is6iNT6Z3_GZSKCBe_/s1600/DSC03332.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Give your outdoor fabric a nice gentle wash, and air dry. I just threw mine over the radiator, and it was dry in 10 minutes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAoYKSBBwKho87f1emKpGOKgScDUa1KS-BWqoU7NaYkjG4-nlTU4jgfpvPoz9wdonxdH5yAiDraiM6qu8XJhDZzmEhBcuXlTuyNufof6Zsb3ChNUwziW0CHOccs-DskpY_Ujjqxkt1qC6h/s1600/DSC03335.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAoYKSBBwKho87f1emKpGOKgScDUa1KS-BWqoU7NaYkjG4-nlTU4jgfpvPoz9wdonxdH5yAiDraiM6qu8XJhDZzmEhBcuXlTuyNufof6Zsb3ChNUwziW0CHOccs-DskpY_Ujjqxkt1qC6h/s1600/DSC03335.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Cut your fabric like this:<br />
Length: The length of your door, plus about 3". My door is 36" so I cut my fabric to about 39".<br />
Width: Cut to about 18". Again, my door is just shy of 2" in width, and 18" worked well. It's not a super tight fit, but seems about right.<br />
<br />
And don't worry about getting technical. Remember, this sits on your floor, and gets batted around by the dog. Approximates are a-okay!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Fold RIGHT SIDES OF FABRIC together along the long edge. Pin one long edge and one short edge in place. Use pretty pins because you'll blog about this later.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And sew one long edge and one short edge. I sewed over each twice, just because of that whole sitting on the floor, dog batting it around thing. I want it to be durable!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Quick trial run to see how it fits! See here how my pipe covers are too long. I'll need to cut those down so that the door can open and close easily.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitGUsqroq6YzAf9m3JLolXpfmHTJRg43mBKLG4WIqhvvhA4OVMaw09yanDHwIdTEcAxwhF830rgPtOsxk8gs68QuoiNuq20tTlbiQSMMHhyphenhyphenyprQW3C8hBCY1ohDT75uHEux6GKuue4Amh-/s1600/DSC03374.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitGUsqroq6YzAf9m3JLolXpfmHTJRg43mBKLG4WIqhvvhA4OVMaw09yanDHwIdTEcAxwhF830rgPtOsxk8gs68QuoiNuq20tTlbiQSMMHhyphenhyphenyprQW3C8hBCY1ohDT75uHEux6GKuue4Amh-/s1600/DSC03374.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Cut those pipe covers down to your liking. I cut mine to measure about an inch less than my door.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6EMEZ-s4DhDIIBuybcCHtxiNG-OL0yzaov1_BJGTXaIFvFdhhposMMEq56jHx7_kABu8Cxt_1cEN3o0D-sIIKaLiaa-w8Ol5Ihpz-K3DdRRPqGXFrsBqu6EL8KIX1DvQBUW_dYd7ZCVKx/s1600/DSC03364.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6EMEZ-s4DhDIIBuybcCHtxiNG-OL0yzaov1_BJGTXaIFvFdhhposMMEq56jHx7_kABu8Cxt_1cEN3o0D-sIIKaLiaa-w8Ol5Ihpz-K3DdRRPqGXFrsBqu6EL8KIX1DvQBUW_dYd7ZCVKx/s1600/DSC03364.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now pull out the pipe covers, and fold your draft stopper in half just to create a little crease down the middle. Eyeball it, and then sew right down that crease. Somewhere CLOSE to the middle is just fine!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Pop those pipe covers back in, and cut off excess fabric, leaving yourself enough to sew up the end.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Tuck those loose ends in, any which way you can. I sort of made a little present at the end. Sew up with some sturdy thread, and voila!<br />

<br />
Ok, almost voila. My ends puckered a little and were getting stuck in the door. So I just folded them in, and sewed them to the bottom. Easy little fix, and you can't see it from the top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQW0oxXdyO8P_hRVwaVcHBvVT8ZYJV1b6l_PGChzGhkEFaWssyKnZzn735mkksaz_W4L4d2Ddl60IOcOlcofBjXFhQ_bNJF_4Y5m1yUeNO-sb9unSF3PJzb7qBM9p3GD7k0oa2HPACKwpG/s1600/DSC03402.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQW0oxXdyO8P_hRVwaVcHBvVT8ZYJV1b6l_PGChzGhkEFaWssyKnZzn735mkksaz_W4L4d2Ddl60IOcOlcofBjXFhQ_bNJF_4Y5m1yUeNO-sb9unSF3PJzb7qBM9p3GD7k0oa2HPACKwpG/s1600/DSC03402.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now for real, voila! Bye bye draft. Don't you love that rug in the entryway? A Christmas present from my mom; she made it herself! You'll have to ask her how she did that... I'm just the door draft stopper girl.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi811lKLRFztHYjZxx0mbLVotatCAIO-_Kr7uYxPcQFxyV1WK_B7sACMD5lnH5vW2oY81jahdWcmuSXMcaDPXl7ijvpIx6csxoG6JTrRLnf3jbGIyXX0MIKwUcbD79w_ACrSXs1IJ0W4oww/s1600/DSC03398.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi811lKLRFztHYjZxx0mbLVotatCAIO-_Kr7uYxPcQFxyV1WK_B7sACMD5lnH5vW2oY81jahdWcmuSXMcaDPXl7ijvpIx6csxoG6JTrRLnf3jbGIyXX0MIKwUcbD79w_ACrSXs1IJ0W4oww/s1600/DSC03398.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
There you are, a fun and inexpensive little do-it-yourself-er. I'm going to use that striped fabric to make a door snake for an interior door. That should be even easier... I'll just make the pocket, fill it with rice, and sew up.<br />
<br />
Happy stitching, and STAY WARM!!<br />

My new favorite thing - embroidery with color crayon tinting! I've put together a little step-by-step of how to color your fabric before you embroider. I hope you find it helpful!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm taking a class on this gorgeous quilt - A Gardener's Alphabet from <a href="http://www.crabapplehillstudio.com/" target="_blank">Crabapple Hill</a>. Each block is color tinted, and today I'm working on Block C. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEnsjFfr-_l7yZJP3EnqvEXuDepXAfvFJ1pVuM1P7E23cuAxQf5GvP0nwcGajcXF9dSwtdfMdp-CfkbgVCFommvoEfpO4wP1hahZsEWsO9C5UwlWRbVMVQkb7lw4zTp4I6ohb0ueeVMwoN/s1600/A+Gardener's%2BAlphabet.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEnsjFfr-_l7yZJP3EnqvEXuDepXAfvFJ1pVuM1P7E23cuAxQf5GvP0nwcGajcXF9dSwtdfMdp-CfkbgVCFommvoEfpO4wP1hahZsEWsO9C5UwlWRbVMVQkb7lw4zTp4I6ohb0ueeVMwoN/s1600/A+Gardener's+Alphabet.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Whenever coloring your stitchery fabric with crayon, step one is to wash and dry your fabrics without using any softener. Press your fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now tape your pattern to a light box or a sunny window, and use a fine-tip Pigma pen to trace out the pattern. Avoid water- or air-erasable pens as these can be permanently set into your fabric when you heat-set the color later on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Prepare a clean, smooth surface on which to color. Trim away loose threads, and give yourself ample space. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tint everything that you will color in WHITE. This fills in those little fabric pores and gives you a nice base over which to color.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, pull out the crayons and embroidery floss that you'll be using in order to decide on colors ahead of time. The pattern tells you which colors to use so make sure you have those handy and that you like the combination. Don't be afraid to change it up!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here I pulled out the floss and the crayons, and then I put them together to make sure I liked the pattern's suggestions. I did!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDK9JE18nFp2TDLbO6meq3QWhd8-7VeR8wkodfmaLT_j1MJ6d1K0Wk0ukSPwAMG-DMhhB2O3rYbirh5OXC0tC2BgiBZmucUExLsr1LAPhTobe3ToVJLqC_P55lS4ZX769LD8Gf6FoK6CC4/s1600/Colors+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDK9JE18nFp2TDLbO6meq3QWhd8-7VeR8wkodfmaLT_j1MJ6d1K0Wk0ukSPwAMG-DMhhB2O3rYbirh5OXC0tC2BgiBZmucUExLsr1LAPhTobe3ToVJLqC_P55lS4ZX769LD8Gf6FoK6CC4/s1600/Colors+Collage.jpg" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Experiment, experiment, experiment. Always have a scrap of your background fabric on hand to play with before coloring your actual block.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhckEWd-Rpn7Y2Z8A4b6eBeBtcmBrDG0RR0aAp7qqrjCKh3N3Jkfo4JUOC7VXzbVnNv6MDyilMwi1JfTcoxvOers3IgXFVld2QH2D67rJOysC9IoqroLh5YLA-LNxZV5Ng8CIxxN_ecp3m9/s1600/DSC03256.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhckEWd-Rpn7Y2Z8A4b6eBeBtcmBrDG0RR0aAp7qqrjCKh3N3Jkfo4JUOC7VXzbVnNv6MDyilMwi1JfTcoxvOers3IgXFVld2QH2D67rJOysC9IoqroLh5YLA-LNxZV5Ng8CIxxN_ecp3m9/s1600/DSC03256.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Begin with your lightest shade of crayon, and get darker as you go. You can always go darker, but it's pretty hard to go lighter! I color everything in - sort of a second "base" of color - before I begin to shade. And you can always leave some parts white. Where light hits an object, it often looks white. Remember - you can always darken it in later on!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsD72JaISg49mSaY7VR6QLmbPBom5Dcvqn9oDPDjC150_EtwwVYnYhN_j86suQQua3cNYw0JF4z-kJdGQzz0P2N7tK3ue6VUWJmri5jE0AizR2HE6nBeEminCbgbjc4ShujRY9Z4_7tanp/s1600/Begin+to+Color+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsD72JaISg49mSaY7VR6QLmbPBom5Dcvqn9oDPDjC150_EtwwVYnYhN_j86suQQua3cNYw0JF4z-kJdGQzz0P2N7tK3ue6VUWJmri5jE0AizR2HE6nBeEminCbgbjc4ShujRY9Z4_7tanp/s1600/Begin+to+Color+Collage.jpg" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now this is where we get into shading. A little planning is helpful. Just remember that objects in the foreground tend to be lighter than those in the background. The edge of an object, where is sits behind another, is often darker. In this example, I think of the area below each line on the carrots as being shaded, therefore darker. Here's what I mean:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimbmoHRdxFBEP0l5znfMDRJQT-vCGzTcNLJGiL3rSowQ5kGKB7-xa5dlYOP-uFznWLL_1Z2sr0AfgmD6HXbZjFqcEJ4UtqjyIGJBx3W2WrW47YXD8g3PN-OK6m2k7gpZ-MXFqJ8N8ekMY2/s1600/DSC03268.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimbmoHRdxFBEP0l5znfMDRJQT-vCGzTcNLJGiL3rSowQ5kGKB7-xa5dlYOP-uFznWLL_1Z2sr0AfgmD6HXbZjFqcEJ4UtqjyIGJBx3W2WrW47YXD8g3PN-OK6m2k7gpZ-MXFqJ8N8ekMY2/s1600/DSC03268.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I colored in the Letter C as the pattern suggested, and my coloring was complete!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxOEI1gr8yXgEdP8JlOtq-kv94q67ERfzFb3oz9LiSdgN8SsBTxITHaVldQHNnZWio1s0t-PqAjnf1Et12k75UartYYGT9fNhudgvZmR8XMziU8j-TdSmr7NCELshyM_u3Mr0kzYhswRdN/s1600/DSC03290.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxOEI1gr8yXgEdP8JlOtq-kv94q67ERfzFb3oz9LiSdgN8SsBTxITHaVldQHNnZWio1s0t-PqAjnf1Et12k75UartYYGT9fNhudgvZmR8XMziU8j-TdSmr7NCELshyM_u3Mr0kzYhswRdN/s1600/DSC03290.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Now it's time to heat set. Place a clean paper towel over your project, and press with a hot iron, without using steam. Lift up the towel, and if it's completely free of crayon, your done! If not, repeat with a clean towel until the towel comes back clean.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnOLCLg8DOq26ibJgJzivMzkcjVTGSw3RGK89qYgOrbzksFZGFt9ZNEg8L0BGM2F0QCA5pXVqJA8Ev1kLQBwNwRhyd9Lyc2xgTO_tQahWkpMyEzQZ_rF2UWxl57tZkVGQ5sSrr2UU4i38W/s1600/Heat+Set+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnOLCLg8DOq26ibJgJzivMzkcjVTGSw3RGK89qYgOrbzksFZGFt9ZNEg8L0BGM2F0QCA5pXVqJA8Ev1kLQBwNwRhyd9Lyc2xgTO_tQahWkpMyEzQZ_rF2UWxl57tZkVGQ5sSrr2UU4i38W/s1600/Heat+Set+Collage.jpg" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Now here's the block after heat setting. The heat helps to smooth the color, giving it a nice finished look.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So what do you think? Not too hard, right? Everyone's block will look different, and that's the best part of being creative. Hope you have fun, and <a href="mailto:sara@blueberrybackroads.com" target="_blank">contact me</a> anytime with questions, comments, ideas... I'd love to hear from you!<br />

<br />
I LOVE working with metallic embroidery floss. Well, I don't exactly love <i>working </i> with it, but I do love its effect. It can be tricky! So I've put together a few tips to help you work with the stuff.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGi0CKhvR2QCVaArlSyR9EvTo1kGSOz3xYOpWKxO0cn6RNjmz4EjbNqAISbRnfQwLL1H58ci1xMxdU64tG1j6hg9NATo0gAgnWYfOOvEXQoImdrqPSDr0Sy8fIdP4Ert0H8sGHzJE8lNlC/s1600/DMC+Metallic+Embroidery+Floss+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGi0CKhvR2QCVaArlSyR9EvTo1kGSOz3xYOpWKxO0cn6RNjmz4EjbNqAISbRnfQwLL1H58ci1xMxdU64tG1j6hg9NATo0gAgnWYfOOvEXQoImdrqPSDr0Sy8fIdP4Ert0H8sGHzJE8lNlC/s1600/DMC+Metallic+Embroidery+Floss+1.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
First off - it's kind of difficult! No two ways about it, it just is. You have to have a little extra patience to work with metallics. But they add so much to a project, that I think they're worth it. Here are a few things I've done with metallic hand embroidery floss.<br />
<br />
On <i>A Patchwork Forest</i>, I used a blue metallic floss to give the embroidered snowflakes a little sparkle.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirWvQ_haJPPoOGFNK9NVcrH_89kqAiWtqmbCWUYF-dyq-WxtulhHQE6zQE6qsUUgRo94Ka-nfL1u6m3W8tjyDZRR8-yq4QxTKtJcpglcFYxJ2wQojxcWd0wzEIesJkPU7mVI0MrgMAViyX/s1600/Collage+-+A+Patchwork+Forest.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirWvQ_haJPPoOGFNK9NVcrH_89kqAiWtqmbCWUYF-dyq-WxtulhHQE6zQE6qsUUgRo94Ka-nfL1u6m3W8tjyDZRR8-yq4QxTKtJcpglcFYxJ2wQojxcWd0wzEIesJkPU7mVI0MrgMAViyX/s1600/Collage+-+A+Patchwork+Forest.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
On <i>All is Bright</i>, the metallic gold gives the project and old-fashioned Christmas card look.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7k_iiSGuXmuuZhtdw20uXno30G_VpAX-tT1pt6XmvoTedYDTkQJMvEr4hNAPyGMQQICg901Ou7dWv7IMCUuza54wfgC5LH7cYCF9GT1jQKKRuHMhlvR_busMuMLHYCz75pcBF642gIwEl/s1600/Collage+-+All+is+Bright.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7k_iiSGuXmuuZhtdw20uXno30G_VpAX-tT1pt6XmvoTedYDTkQJMvEr4hNAPyGMQQICg901Ou7dWv7IMCUuza54wfgC5LH7cYCF9GT1jQKKRuHMhlvR_busMuMLHYCz75pcBF642gIwEl/s1600/Collage+-+All+is+Bright.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And on <i>Christmas by the Fire</i>, the metallic golds and copper set the fire aglow.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuaveSUdcSnuU0RoQlzUILjOtxBTbSAaX7lMQlXaQvEQDwXw3b4VShduiuEaffoNQQBc8clr_YKllxkNZbURaLVNaysHJlWVO79u8RcftXtFFWIbswpfAze2I_ccd6DRuUKnSq5sRsteur/s1600/Collage+-+Christmas+by+the+Fire.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuaveSUdcSnuU0RoQlzUILjOtxBTbSAaX7lMQlXaQvEQDwXw3b4VShduiuEaffoNQQBc8clr_YKllxkNZbURaLVNaysHJlWVO79u8RcftXtFFWIbswpfAze2I_ccd6DRuUKnSq5sRsteur/s1600/Collage+-+Christmas+by+the+Fire.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My patterns call for DMC metallic floss. There are other brands out there, but DMC is just the one that I've tried. I like their colors and availability. Here are a few I've picked up at local craft stores.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0-brOnYQaYouXhhT0FO-KSynO47dk0doTVDhXZn2GRWMFp0W-Tl24Z8ugdrClo_kG_MSLkcaFk3bdPnTQUq4vPF1frdbKPdPBD3jlTIMWhi9LvZY_skr02fqy659ua_W0i5kewr3SgiNR/s1600/DMC+Metallic+Embroidery+Floss.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0-brOnYQaYouXhhT0FO-KSynO47dk0doTVDhXZn2GRWMFp0W-Tl24Z8ugdrClo_kG_MSLkcaFk3bdPnTQUq4vPF1frdbKPdPBD3jlTIMWhi9LvZY_skr02fqy659ua_W0i5kewr3SgiNR/s1600/DMC+Metallic+Embroidery+Floss.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Below is a picture of what happens to the ends of this floss. It frays like crazy! Just be aware of that, and <b><span style="color: orange;">USE SHORT STRANDS</span></b>. Plan to cut your floss to no more than 15" or so. It takes a little extra time when you need to re-thread the needle, but the overall frustration level will be less - trust me! And <b style="color: orange;">TRIM THE LOOSE END AS YOU GO</b> to prevent it from getting all knotted up. You'll lose some length, but the look will be cleaner.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCyXyjKnSZ2jzEdieAk9H6QjVGRUTX4J4f0Oq7W0L72AE1eWNP11kFpLryxNExoWD3LVsTJ8tb14FlqXMyDh4H1QBLgcaEtaRlDwWAASglZwu2QoQDqCXRi383iqy2OYGmNQlj9Jf5MvF_/s1600/Frayed+End.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCyXyjKnSZ2jzEdieAk9H6QjVGRUTX4J4f0Oq7W0L72AE1eWNP11kFpLryxNExoWD3LVsTJ8tb14FlqXMyDh4H1QBLgcaEtaRlDwWAASglZwu2QoQDqCXRi383iqy2OYGmNQlj9Jf5MvF_/s1600/Frayed+End.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b><span style="color: orange;">USE A NEEDLE WITH A LARGE EYE</span></b>. I like to use a chenille needle like the one pictured on the bottom. The metallic-ness (my new word) holds together better when there's less friction against the needle. I think this is the most important tip of all!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizjc3og5gDwcU1UX1uIzrOtLCgyIpyMyaw40HVtobyEAfnF_uhMFY-TUHU7w5Gv6Q8ts-LaNGCvl_jXzMj0x2RYPqhjSwF-JHhZJ2BqKlWmpkLmAgDY4kkBYDgu8Nf-75vL6AiQYKVdqjL/s1600/Needles.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizjc3og5gDwcU1UX1uIzrOtLCgyIpyMyaw40HVtobyEAfnF_uhMFY-TUHU7w5Gv6Q8ts-LaNGCvl_jXzMj0x2RYPqhjSwF-JHhZJ2BqKlWmpkLmAgDY4kkBYDgu8Nf-75vL6AiQYKVdqjL/s1600/Needles.JPG" height="522" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: orange;"><b>PLAN ON THERE BEING A LITTLE WASTE</b></span>. It' hard to store this stuff once it's been separated! DMC metallics come in 6-strand skeins, and if you don't use all six strands for a project... well... those leftover strands end up looking like this - pretty but not all that functional. When I start a new project, I always start with a fresh strand of floss.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieW7phulwULEUc9_Iy7S_m-gJASdjTE7uFXhJrDXmOm67Kt2m1Wn6BIeg7vyhIaHVNrxVKKf3zqJhl4W53kpYP8f8VXkx48oaHJ94q1yAOeoL3R1330LACjVxDxnZMz8V7sVZhFLvFYiaP/s1600/Metallic+Floss.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieW7phulwULEUc9_Iy7S_m-gJASdjTE7uFXhJrDXmOm67Kt2m1Wn6BIeg7vyhIaHVNrxVKKf3zqJhl4W53kpYP8f8VXkx48oaHJ94q1yAOeoL3R1330LACjVxDxnZMz8V7sVZhFLvFYiaP/s1600/Metallic+Floss.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I like to store all of my embroidery floss like this. Pick up these little <b><span style="color: orange;">PLASTIC FLOSS BOBBINS</span></b> at most craft and sewing stores. And be sure to <span style="color: orange;"><b>LABEL THE BOBBIN</b></span> with the floss color so you can easily find it for your next project.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjolNr0wNEIEJssQ0sa6EsNVu51Kzlmr2RYxEpvCD0AHWHVoByNQANCwraP1nRvBtodE5QGvJ57s42VGkDIkV4bnThRxtRVNLiMMGgPcdevupwla7DV_3LTapEyQERwkf7vqf8Qn9_2wQTs/s1600/Storing+Metallic+Floss.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjolNr0wNEIEJssQ0sa6EsNVu51Kzlmr2RYxEpvCD0AHWHVoByNQANCwraP1nRvBtodE5QGvJ57s42VGkDIkV4bnThRxtRVNLiMMGgPcdevupwla7DV_3LTapEyQERwkf7vqf8Qn9_2wQTs/s1600/Storing+Metallic+Floss.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b><span style="color: orange;">SEW SLOWLY! </span></b>In this picture, you see what often happens as you embroider. The strands separate. Now you can try different methods of knotting to alleviate this, but I find that just going slowly, and taking the time to pull individual strands through when necessary, is the way to go. It's just a matter of being patient and knowing that the end result will be worth it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUIYqDkX5Sf9opweisXDxuYwYC2z_z9eEg0jjburYJsXw9622t-O5q8vk1_4YbT3lLR6QaYOGfD02rzDYvRqoTgoLE49e85dqlEY_cnytvJ1XykyYKdGeTsq9lgGcTv4-uN4ZW0fVqZ0Gq/s1600/Sewing+with+Metallic+Floss.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUIYqDkX5Sf9opweisXDxuYwYC2z_z9eEg0jjburYJsXw9622t-O5q8vk1_4YbT3lLR6QaYOGfD02rzDYvRqoTgoLE49e85dqlEY_cnytvJ1XykyYKdGeTsq9lgGcTv4-uN4ZW0fVqZ0Gq/s1600/Sewing+with+Metallic+Floss.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you're a machine embroiderer, I came across <a href="http://www.nancysnotions.com/category/video+demos/metallic+thread.do" target="_blank">this helpful tutorial</a> from Nancy's Notions. I haven't done any machine embroidery myself, but I think her tips make a lot of sense.<br />

Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 10Welcome to <a href="http://www.blueberrybackroads.com/" target="_blank">Blueberry Backroads</a>!<br />
<br />
I'm Sara, and I'm thrilled to have my block chosen to appear in <a href="http://www.quiltmaker.com/blogs/quiltypleasures/2014/11/quiltmakers-100-blocks-blog-tour-day-1-2/" target="_blank">Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 10</a>. Embroidery is my game, and I hope you love it too!<br />
<br />
Scroll to the bottom to learn about <b><i>THREE WAYS TO WIN</i></b> your free issue of Volume 10!<br />
<br />
Here's my block - Winter Red -<br />
I was inspired to design this block by the beautiful variegated grey embroidery floss. This past year I've been experimenting with different brands and colors of floss, and I've fallen in love with the variegateds!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcj8AZJ3fVzDnUIFzy8i_H9y8uK4b3OZ5lD92aDDo2yBfdaiExHe0Y33hF4cgyRwVeVFptsOw94g_0uevrA3joZB_wS4JLBuZ5-SOzCuZ7-9X9h-QXh9Q9YvCWYmtacm54yGoNMi1nqgM7/s1600/Winter+Red+-+Magazine+Pic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcj8AZJ3fVzDnUIFzy8i_H9y8uK4b3OZ5lD92aDDo2yBfdaiExHe0Y33hF4cgyRwVeVFptsOw94g_0uevrA3joZB_wS4JLBuZ5-SOzCuZ7-9X9h-QXh9Q9YvCWYmtacm54yGoNMi1nqgM7/s640/Winter+Red+-+Magazine+Pic.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I like to use a water-erasable fabric pen to trace out my patterns. That way I can make mistakes, go outside the lines, play with the look, and it all disappears with the dab of a damp cloth when I'm done.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hope you all had a fun filled Halloween. I went out to South Dakota and went trick-or-treating with my nieces. It's my favorite holiday to spend with them! What could be cuter?<br />

<br />
Hope you're enjoying some beautiful fall weather, maybe working on some fun fall projects. Me, I'm into designing for winter and Christmas patterns right now. It's probably the easiest time for me, as I love to draw snowmen!<br />
<br />
I have a new one, just completed today. I still have to write the pattern, and I'm looking for your help! Go to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/blueberrybackroads" target="_blank">Blueberry Backroads' Facebook page</a>, and name the pattern - under the October 14th post. If I choose your pattern name, I'll send you a free pattern - any one you like from my website!<br />
<br />
And while you're there, don't forget to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/blueberrybackroads" target="_blank">LIKE US</a> and never miss out on new pattern announcements, show dates, and more.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzvXaKeaWQN48QaCb65KhhkJcN1qRQoGNwK_6mXlN0ypH5xyx3CuIqWzGVDHjYd4dW0WYSNiNcZLSCsgYLfzqVGZJppAFErgaX_O2IY863_bK0zeEdrLrbajjQyJNpDJAjkFt0LMXVJ3Cv/s1600/Crayola!.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzvXaKeaWQN48QaCb65KhhkJcN1qRQoGNwK_6mXlN0ypH5xyx3CuIqWzGVDHjYd4dW0WYSNiNcZLSCsgYLfzqVGZJppAFErgaX_O2IY863_bK0zeEdrLrbajjQyJNpDJAjkFt0LMXVJ3Cv/s1600/Crayola!.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
I went nuts and bought the bonus box. Who doesn't need 96 color crayons??!!<br />
<br />
Last week I started taking a class at a most fantastic quilt shop in my neck of the woods - <a href="http://www.thenoblequilter.com/" target="_blank">The Noble Quilter</a> in Elk River, Minnesota. The project - A Gardener's Alphabet, designed by <a href="http://www.crabapplehillstudio.com/" target="_blank">Crabapple Hill</a>, taught by the very talented Connie Chapman. Here's a picture of her completed quilt, hanging up at The Noble Quilter. This is what I'm aspiring to!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7tdmaDZ3g7XW2tbQFCEwsU5i_sJIQMGOqJ7tlZSLPt9klGko6qXxAPaNxXdUPMOWmlWL61MQZbmBHN3RoLcO03V-0WSpOPsXLDzy3QKZldEkSQj_zB2bvCddpQYT853_VitMO798dTUWx/s1600/A+Gardener's%2BAlphabet.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7tdmaDZ3g7XW2tbQFCEwsU5i_sJIQMGOqJ7tlZSLPt9klGko6qXxAPaNxXdUPMOWmlWL61MQZbmBHN3RoLcO03V-0WSpOPsXLDzy3QKZldEkSQj_zB2bvCddpQYT853_VitMO798dTUWx/s1600/A+Gardener's%2BAlphabet.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I got started today with the color crayon portion of the project, AND I AM CRAYOLA'S NEW BIGGEST FAN. Here's a little step-by-step of how I colored Block A.<br />
<br />
As the pattern highly recommends, I first colored in everything with a white crayon. This seems to add a nice base over which to color. It fills in the muslin fabric's "pores", providing a nice, smooth surface. And then I chose my greens, and started to fill in those leaves! Connie suggested starting with the lightest color, then shading with darker and darker colors. And it really seemed to work!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzf7H7fFvaqnV0jMySbyAt-HEXRYyQ-jEhiFpyn0urSHjy22tgtGiteuFS6V9e2juj7PEBspP5kEyaoob9UljmaFrubHhclP7gW2_NyedIRL1203UgNQkGKtJvhQFeQy1bu-DGW41dTbPP/s1600/LetterA1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzf7H7fFvaqnV0jMySbyAt-HEXRYyQ-jEhiFpyn0urSHjy22tgtGiteuFS6V9e2juj7PEBspP5kEyaoob9UljmaFrubHhclP7gW2_NyedIRL1203UgNQkGKtJvhQFeQy1bu-DGW41dTbPP/s1600/LetterA1.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
On to the pumpkin. I started out by coloring it in with gold, then shading with orange, and then brown (light to dark).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9CUaFW6ErQmq4ZSOpSnolhb9dXzEOIC0ufSSjljyprp4WWpyNx9GbXRJKQJR4-KcnEqWWDwnx2nPV64loBLlSHcXGIFBt3iTJLPeX4wP5UXLBAfjdvnoOXp8vMLZN3oLYCAFGUz3wYZfG/s1600/LetterA2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9CUaFW6ErQmq4ZSOpSnolhb9dXzEOIC0ufSSjljyprp4WWpyNx9GbXRJKQJR4-KcnEqWWDwnx2nPV64loBLlSHcXGIFBt3iTJLPeX4wP5UXLBAfjdvnoOXp8vMLZN3oLYCAFGUz3wYZfG/s1600/LetterA2.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm amazed by how much dimension the brown gives!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi52Cjk_WJvp6c-gS5eGHbo6bFaEZJ46IlLDJEcizU7xAh2IWmL2m5-5iZyWUsEw8v6GR8v0cmTCUfkY5_enIaHcuQ82dyOBDMqf_nGWk70CL0iM_SW85KaszwvIgS2pM_Rqx7hvdgpL36L/s1600/LetterA3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi52Cjk_WJvp6c-gS5eGHbo6bFaEZJ46IlLDJEcizU7xAh2IWmL2m5-5iZyWUsEw8v6GR8v0cmTCUfkY5_enIaHcuQ82dyOBDMqf_nGWk70CL0iM_SW85KaszwvIgS2pM_Rqx7hvdgpL36L/s1600/LetterA3.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, I colored in the letters and Little Miss Butterfly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlZesOv9szoQ9mmmur9kmfBLkwhH2tU0AZ6PIeHVSTBWQWR8Eklv-Eyn2cDrRJxWb9NDYDHG5Z78WkT1iOcNSZPoIjAQqJLdqCcxaFoSYCtEg-LcnTXH9_Kdw9R4gXsBl-UmBko47iHLcx/s1600/LetterA4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlZesOv9szoQ9mmmur9kmfBLkwhH2tU0AZ6PIeHVSTBWQWR8Eklv-Eyn2cDrRJxWb9NDYDHG5Z78WkT1iOcNSZPoIjAQqJLdqCcxaFoSYCtEg-LcnTXH9_Kdw9R4gXsBl-UmBko47iHLcx/s1600/LetterA4.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
Next - I embroider! I can't wait to sit down this evening and get started.<br />
<br />
On a side note, check out this rainbow that my 3-year old niece, Isla, drew. I think it's the most adorable use of color I've ever seen. If my sister doesn't convince her to draw me one of these soon, I have no qualms about stealing this off her fridge!<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
Hope you had a fantastic Labor Day weekend. The Minnesota State Fair was going on so we made a couple trips there and indulged in cheese curds, salted nut rolls, turkey sandwiches, unlimited MILK (love MN!), etc, etc. </div>

<div>
Back to work this week, and we have three new patterns available!</div>

Something just sort of comes to me - sometimes first thing in the morning, sometimes upon seeing something beautiful in nature, and sometimes... when I look at a dishtowel! Let me explain.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Tonight I was reorganizing my work area, and came upon this dishtowel I purchased a couple of months ago. Pretty cute, right?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy-c7H6b0Pu7PwqXqtOwxKSk_QoupI8zFh2_zztKtKQ-vi2iSHcQhZwFi_6LPXynVafoAEqncF4DBvJDcLamjn5XmoI7cVKHFNeB73Pnj8bpEHnfeU3guUqfNgckx2iM3OHY7ouYwrXAZn/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy-c7H6b0Pu7PwqXqtOwxKSk_QoupI8zFh2_zztKtKQ-vi2iSHcQhZwFi_6LPXynVafoAEqncF4DBvJDcLamjn5XmoI7cVKHFNeB73Pnj8bpEHnfeU3guUqfNgckx2iM3OHY7ouYwrXAZn/s1600/014.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well, that made me think - Hey, I like birds! Other people like birds! Right...??? So why not make a stitchery with birds! Then it's thinking about how to make those birds take shape... And I recall this recent pattern I completed called Wildflower Sampler.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitly0jbhr3Zhyphenhyphen9UPgTZ8Id-sKDohAZSKQidP_8t1OPaJd9UGJPc7dRT40ZZEoQVqAUavOrJaokIHT9w2gRkTQtI-FCQtuyme5q8Or9tUJ3zVYUJqqx2e_dw4Gdo3YWrtPPO0e9WxKnnNb6/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitly0jbhr3Zhyphenhyphen9UPgTZ8Id-sKDohAZSKQidP_8t1OPaJd9UGJPc7dRT40ZZEoQVqAUavOrJaokIHT9w2gRkTQtI-FCQtuyme5q8Or9tUJ3zVYUJqqx2e_dw4Gdo3YWrtPPO0e9WxKnnNb6/s1600/011.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And it occurs to me - that same concept would work beautifully with birds! So far so good. I take a few notes, think about nests and birdhouses and such...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And now comes my FAVORITE part - drawing! I pull up some pictures of birds on my computer. I know I want to include a robin. So I just look at hundreds of pictures of robins, remind myself what they look like, how their wings lay, how long their beaks are, and...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR2ii76rGxsV_VQuL6wJbEcEtCoKvpf_JmYvTKVuKpEDdOLL9qTeA6ImObai90AY3j2Wq7nE9i2cama4kBBl64Ds0YfNZtwG0qzPF9JTfLTRPRmDvLuBua8UwIwkicd5MofT0DbEF4hqXC/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR2ii76rGxsV_VQuL6wJbEcEtCoKvpf_JmYvTKVuKpEDdOLL9qTeA6ImObai90AY3j2Wq7nE9i2cama4kBBl64Ds0YfNZtwG0qzPF9JTfLTRPRmDvLuBua8UwIwkicd5MofT0DbEF4hqXC/s1600/006.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Ta da! A robin! Next let's try a goldfinch...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT_bwNZaBwKZExvJX6HaAu7gOjGljL3agEPu-ixRFFIv9x2vf6A2BpXU5UMPbOrlR8ofoYtbFqtfTjnx734_ipJos6Z6QhUvUqTsUrM1dN9C-6RLx0u5Zyb6e_VN3qxlb9_yoe9Uv-lOKc/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT_bwNZaBwKZExvJX6HaAu7gOjGljL3agEPu-ixRFFIv9x2vf6A2BpXU5UMPbOrlR8ofoYtbFqtfTjnx734_ipJos6Z6QhUvUqTsUrM1dN9C-6RLx0u5Zyb6e_VN3qxlb9_yoe9Uv-lOKc/s1600/005.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have two more to draw. Maybe a meadowlark? Maybe a chickadee? Not sure, but I can't wait to get back to drawing!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic9AHLLKsAzNT2QblDobHgdiM3c36kse4h0uOl6B_kZiOgIuovMKbjHaXn_goKFelSlT53qamFqg3eVgD2Rzg9nAbDyhbJcVT2oJqyQLH6GDHszUJNVOLejhhyphenhyphendsyRGItuyGqvuCOAOrc6/s1600/024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic9AHLLKsAzNT2QblDobHgdiM3c36kse4h0uOl6B_kZiOgIuovMKbjHaXn_goKFelSlT53qamFqg3eVgD2Rzg9nAbDyhbJcVT2oJqyQLH6GDHszUJNVOLejhhyphenhyphendsyRGItuyGqvuCOAOrc6/s1600/024.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibe9ePF13mKM2ZjbyAOyPs2czGtS_k10zCKSDAYFo8iOCHqimhBgXRadKS1Da95bTbwPvZaZDhTmf197E8JTFGOwaMiopNCsh9mzkLb-nrKhr5sR4ekLuNnEWUIkARRW40zIFtArP7r1Qf/s1600/020.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibe9ePF13mKM2ZjbyAOyPs2czGtS_k10zCKSDAYFo8iOCHqimhBgXRadKS1Da95bTbwPvZaZDhTmf197E8JTFGOwaMiopNCsh9mzkLb-nrKhr5sR4ekLuNnEWUIkARRW40zIFtArP7r1Qf/s1600/020.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And that's how my design process begins. Tweet tweet!</div>

Ah! Check out this rainbow:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsuct2PB_WnWSSF8Qi-hK2zYfi47yRcC9Zuxz0DQ_ehPchrvUivFIVvUCnb4PAR_oeOmuqtSTdORQVr3dWJ2wAgOVDBLeadoZYipb6OCplICzI5IlbfQqWaYpv4pYUT0Vj3h6VDeb5h8jf/s1600/Gentle+Art+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsuct2PB_WnWSSF8Qi-hK2zYfi47yRcC9Zuxz0DQ_ehPchrvUivFIVvUCnb4PAR_oeOmuqtSTdORQVr3dWJ2wAgOVDBLeadoZYipb6OCplICzI5IlbfQqWaYpv4pYUT0Vj3h6VDeb5h8jf/s1600/Gentle+Art+1.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Gorgeous, right? Six thread count, colorfast, and well... gorgeous! I'm a mad scientist in her laboratory, scheming up ideas. That's how I feel when I get my hands on such beautiful supplies anyway!<br />
<br />
So here's what I'm thinking... I've been wanting to do some small embroidery projects geared toward baby. I found these 1930's fabrics the other day at <a href="http://www.fourseasonsquiltsmn.com/" target="_blank">Four Seasons Quilts</a> (a most wonderful quilt shop here in the Twin Cities by the way).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMO2mdXKnkNS7tNpE4a4mhi4zCME3wvlYhPOauqwg4_pzoRsT5Tx1YVWoNDakO4g2X-FAoU5Mrl0hj8EcQYw-RO3ebUp3teN5xljl7bgTIu76vSbySbg2wL0-tWKp0o91jQndbAKu92yzp/s1600/Gentle+Art+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMO2mdXKnkNS7tNpE4a4mhi4zCME3wvlYhPOauqwg4_pzoRsT5Tx1YVWoNDakO4g2X-FAoU5Mrl0hj8EcQYw-RO3ebUp3teN5xljl7bgTIu76vSbySbg2wL0-tWKp0o91jQndbAKu92yzp/s1600/Gentle+Art+2.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And now I'm starting on a some little baby gift ideas...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hey there! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This last week I've been working on some new things for fall and trying out <a href="http://www.weeksdyeworks.com/" target="_blank">Weeks Dye Works</a> embroidery floss. I'm digging it! The variegated effect that this hand dyed floss offers is right up my ally. I love the dimension it gives to my projects. Six strands is perfect, as I need the option to use just one strand on that little stuff. It knots up less than DMC, hardly at all really, and I like that the tones are slightly more muted... less "shiny" than DMC. The only trouble I've had is in making French knots. The knots seem to loosen up a little more than I would like. Other than that, fantastic!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Below are some of the great fall colors from Weeks. I love their names! - "Jack-O-Lantern", "Hot Rod", and "Cornbread". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1-Ewsl7DOPC59X2qO_7YGTUww4mkvvXYfaEGr3kvo1lxQ6R7xmo-9AiKkgau59App1oqbJdDdFVcGFr5YglHV9Bb0dxMXwD4ce3NZy3Kx3GHZ9CW1dg3CNHxEiJEASbvkEsNBjzxBYDWK/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1-Ewsl7DOPC59X2qO_7YGTUww4mkvvXYfaEGr3kvo1lxQ6R7xmo-9AiKkgau59App1oqbJdDdFVcGFr5YglHV9Bb0dxMXwD4ce3NZy3Kx3GHZ9CW1dg3CNHxEiJEASbvkEsNBjzxBYDWK/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
How do you transfer the pattern onto your fabric? I use a water soluble fabric pen - every time. I place my fabric on top of a light box - couldn't live without it! - and trace. The pen comes up easily with a damp cloth when I'm done.<br />

<br />
I'm trying out some new embroidery floss, and the flavor of the week is <a href="http://www.weeksdyeworks.com/" target="_blank">Weeks Dye Works</a>. Here's the luscious and oh so generous color palette they provided me with!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyMGH1NP47coVmLV2SXlKaild-5Ukg3FSD062-ML5Ky3NO9xISyfU6PxZ1kt84fON4PtMM2PPmpuM3JcOLig1sO-0kUI-IHhD2eAs_YAJ7cv7IW59u9zHRCXdpOTzkazR0BLi35E00GXh0/s1600/Weeks+Dye+Works.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyMGH1NP47coVmLV2SXlKaild-5Ukg3FSD062-ML5Ky3NO9xISyfU6PxZ1kt84fON4PtMM2PPmpuM3JcOLig1sO-0kUI-IHhD2eAs_YAJ7cv7IW59u9zHRCXdpOTzkazR0BLi35E00GXh0/s1600/Weeks+Dye+Works.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
How fun is that??!! So far I really like it. I do a lot of tiny, detailed stitching, and I like that this floss is made up of six strands. I can pull off just one little strand for all that itty-bitty stuff. I'm used to using DMC, and Weeks seems to knot up less. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the variegated options with Weeks. That color variety adds such dimension to stitchery, I think.<br />
<br />
<b><i>WHAT ABOUT YOU??!! </i></b>What's your favorite embroidery floss? <a href="mailto:sara@blueberrybackroads.com" target="_blank">Shoot me an email</a>, and tell me what you like best!<br />
<br />
Here's what I'm working on with Weeks Dye Works...<br />
<br />
Summer is in full swing so that means it's time for me to start thinking about fall!<br />

I live in a pretty small space so getting all the patterns and samples back in their place is quite the endeavor! Someday I'll have a studio... Anyway, all went well, and we made it home safe and sound. Even the flowers we had in our booths made it back in great shape!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYl_KbSGw1g1nnp4WtHNKG1_fNYMiAnLgLZ2DkOKGlq5tOZELlCsXBSgg3KuBHWirRAFy8yWLZhx-Gq8pd18ZdkklYwNEh7SK0Pft2KmwgGl4iaZ9vB9m9F21ydzXo_Fz3jwW_P7E224k8/s1600/DSC02623.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYl_KbSGw1g1nnp4WtHNKG1_fNYMiAnLgLZ2DkOKGlq5tOZELlCsXBSgg3KuBHWirRAFy8yWLZhx-Gq8pd18ZdkklYwNEh7SK0Pft2KmwgGl4iaZ9vB9m9F21ydzXo_Fz3jwW_P7E224k8/s1600/DSC02623.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div>
Do you love kits? I've updated my website to include kits for some of my newest patterns. They'll be available only while supplies last, so get them while you can! <a href="http://www.blueberrybackroads.com/#!kits/cc1h" target="_blank">Click here</a> to see what's available. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's wishing all of you a sunny holiday weekend. Summer has finally arrived to Minnesota, and I'm going to relax and maybe work on a few new ideas that I have brewing. But definitely going to spend some time outside!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Wherever you head this weekend, don't forget to bring along a little hand work! :)</div>

Tony and I drove the 14 hours from Minneapolis and really enjoyed the scenery. I had never been through this part of the US, and Ohio and Pennsylvania are gorgeous! Trees are blooming, and the weather has been beautiful. My mom flew in and met us this afternoon, and now we're getting set up for <a href="http://www.quilts.com/home/shows/viewer.php?page=SpringMarket" target="_blank">Spring International Quilt Market</a>.<br />
<br />
Ok so here's my booth so far - what a mess! I start with a basic idea and then just start putting things up. So consider this a "before" picture, and I'll post "after" pictures when it's all set up. Organized chaos...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjozbIyYkqe_bFyCI2o9jm4_8vvQURdPVNfw2xEnYMXV2uGzMx9Qcoft335CuVpXN35o_TNopkJvhA6Vqzs8nt849vo-8NJ2HzsfkOlBUaN_euqLTHAFauQ-YOxXBn6_J9HVNYjtsbyTw1U/s1600/001+(3).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjozbIyYkqe_bFyCI2o9jm4_8vvQURdPVNfw2xEnYMXV2uGzMx9Qcoft335CuVpXN35o_TNopkJvhA6Vqzs8nt849vo-8NJ2HzsfkOlBUaN_euqLTHAFauQ-YOxXBn6_J9HVNYjtsbyTw1U/s1600/001+(3).JPG" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now here's my <a href="http://www.redbuttonquiltco.com/" target="_blank">mom's booth</a>. She's right next door to me and quite organized. See the difference... :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Looking forward to getting it all squared away tomorrow and then posting those "after" pictures. See you then!<br />
